‘Tis the season for hot apple cider and fresh doughnuts.  So, instead of me shelling out money to purchase freshly made doughnuts from orchard farms or at farmers markets, I decided to try to make some of my own.

Living in NYC on a budget is hard, so I apologize for not using any fancy dough or making dough from scratch.  I had to work with what I already had in my apartment.  To make my doughnuts, I used a can of biscuits (like the ones that Pillsbury sells), oil, and sugar.

My first step was to separate the dough and shape them into doughnuts.  Then, I heated up a pan with a 1/2 inch of oil.  I waited for the oil to heat up and then I fried the doughnuts.  Look how perfect they look!

I wish you could smell the photo – my apartment smelled lovely.  Anyway, I burned the first batch a bit, so here is how NOT to burn your doughnuts: wait until the sides are a golden brown and flip.  You may not think that the inside dough is cooked, but they are.  If you’re having doubts, fry one doughnut first and try it!  It’s better to try one before you make a mistake on the whole batch.

Once I finished frying these delectable doughnuts, I dropped them in a bowl of white sugar.  I coated them.  Now you can use other flavors if you like, but I love sugar doughnuts so I kept it simple.  And now you’re done! Serve them up with Nutella or with another sweet dessert and you’ve made your own homemade doughnuts.  Here’s a photo of mine!

See, I told you I burned a few of them.  Regardless, they were yummy and easy to make, so I was happy.  Next time I definitely will not burn them!
